Department of Psychological Science

Relevant to all aspects of the human experience, psychology is the scientific study of human thoughts, feelings, and behavior.  A broad field of study, psychologists seek to provide answers to a wide array of questions, such as:

  • How do we learn and remember information?
  • How do we make decisions and what influences those decisions?
  • Why do people develop behavior disorders?
  • What treatments are most effective for what problems?
  • What are the changes involved in moving from infancy to old age?
  • How do we form attitudes and attributions about other people and groups?
  • How is behavior regulated by the brain?
  • What are emotions and how do they influence behavior?
  • How do people work best in groups and teams?
  • How do we build and maintain relationships with others?
  • How do psychological factors affect physical health?
  • How do we assess human potential?

In addition to gaining knowledge of psychological theories, perspectives, and research findings from across the broad field of psychology, students who major (or minor) in psychology will also develop skills that will lead to success outside of the classroom, including how to read and thick critically, how to communicate scientific findings effectively, how to evaluate research articles, and how to use data to make decisions.  The degree in psychology should also help to achieve an understanding of ethical principles related to practice and research, and an appreciation for psychology’s relationship to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.

The Department of Psychological Science offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), an undergraduate Minor in Psychology, and Master of Arts (M.A.) degree programs in General Psychology and Industrial and Organizational Psychology (see the Graduate Catalog for information on the M.A. programs).

The B.S. in Psychology prepares graduates for careers and/or graduate study in the areas of business, healthcare, medicine, counseling, criminal justice, education, and law.
